I May Not Know Who I Am
While her child was taking a nap on their pillow pile, Scarlet was searching through the books and old journals in her room for the next one to read. Her past self must have acquired those over her whole childhood, one or two at a time. Having all of them at once, all waiting to be read for the second first time, was almost intimidating.
She picked one at random to examine and saw that it was in a language she couldn't understand. How odd, she thought. Why keep in your room a book you can't read?
She put it back on the shelf and kept looking. She soon realised that a small but quite noticeable chunk of her collectio

What Now?
Atalanta woke up on Hornet's couch for the second time. She got up and did her morning stretches purely out of habit and without even thinking about it. What occupied her mind was everything her gracious host had explained.
It was a lot of information to take in and she wasn't even convinced Hornet had given all of it yet.
She had lost... a good chunk of her life. The last thing Atalanta remembered clearly was finding her brother's corpse. What led up to this and what happened after was a blur. And after that...
Her train of thought and exercise were interrupted by Hornet entering the room and offering her breakfast, which she a

Welcome To My Nightmare (chapter 2 of 2)
Divine suspected Brumm and Zephyr were up to something. She didn't really know, though. If she knew for sure, she would be obligated to stop them. If she didn't, then Master couldn't get mad at her for not intervening.
Her son was out somewhere (he was old enough to handle himself in the outside world so she didn't have to worry too much), the Master hadn't yet returned from her own errand, and Brumm was talking to Kaydence on the other side of the tent.
The appearance the butterfly had chosen wasn't that much different from how she looked before joining. Her colours had shifted to fit better with t

Welcome To My Nightmare (chapter 1 of 2)
Hornet made her way to the statue of the Ghost Knight and found her niece standing in front of it.
“Hello, auntie”, she said without even turning around.
“I didn't know you would be visiting today. That's a nice surprise.”
Scarlet looked back at her aunt.
“It has been a long time since I've paid a visit to this monument”, she said.
Hornet walked up to and stood next to her niece. The latter was almost twice as tall as her.
“So, what have you been up to lately?” the queen asked.
“Well... We have been working on something for years now. Even w

Kaydence (chapter 2 of 2)
The guest was back in the tent now, and being tended to by Grimmkins in another room. Neither Brumm nor Divine could remember the last time someone who wasn't a Troupe member nor participating in the Ritual in any way came here more than once. Had it happened before? They assumed that given how long the Troupe had existed, most things that could happen had probably already occurred at some point before either of them joined.
Zephyr, the only one of Divine's children who hadn't left the nest, adjusted the mask on his face and sat on the ground as the two older bugs talked.
“I bet she will join us... eventuall

Kaydence (chapter 1 of 2)
While the Troupe only showed up to a kingdom when called, it wasn't uncommon for individual members to set off into the physical realm on their own for a few hours. After all, one bug could only stay in the tent for so long before wishing for a change in scenery. Even the King of Nightmares herself could get bored of the Nightmare Realm after a while, and visiting places that weren't dead kingdoms was always quite interesting.
Also, she could sometimes come across dream essence for the Needle of Unity that Divine and the Grimmkins had made for her.
She had been working with it for years now. Always little by littl

Welcome Home
Brumm was practising with his accordion when he heard Divine call to him :
“Come on out! Master Grimm is back!”
He set his instrument down immediately and rushed outside the main tent under the scarlet sky to find a younger version of his old troupe master affectionately petting the Grimmsteeds.
“Welcome home, Master!” Divine chirped.
“...Welcome home”, Brumm repeated.
Divine's children then ran out to see and circle around the new Grimm.
“Wow, is that him?” they asked. “Is that really him?”
“It's 'her' currently”, the young Master corrected them.

Put This Thing Back Where It Came From
Somewhere on the surface near Dirtmouth's edge, the potential recruits for the royal guard were training. Bugs of various shapes and sizes were sparring and learning from each other under the watchful eyes of their instructor, a retired cicada warrior who had come to the new kingdom shortly after the election of its queen.
“Better be on your best behaviour”, he warned his apprentices who all instantly stopped what they were doing to listen to him, “the queen told me she would check on your progress.”
One of the apprentices raised a hand ; he granted them permission to speak out

The Kingdom of Dirtmouth
Over the next few years, Dirtmouth expanded. The Forgotten Crossroad had been completely absorbed into it now, and some bugs were starting to work on restoring parts of the City of Tears. Also the old well had been replaced by an elevator. Hornet was overseeing it all, making sure everything was going smoothly and providing her help when needed.
She was particularly keen on making sure the expansion of Dirtmouth into the ruins of Hallownest wouldn't cross mantis territory. She had been there with Scarlet once, and it did not go well.
Today, aunt & niece were in Greenpath, seeking out the artists living there.

The Only Intact Object
When Hornet was getting ready for the day, she noticed the charm Scarlet was bound to was missing ; yet the child was still visible, hanging upside-down from the ceiling of their Dirtmouth home.
“Scarlet? Where's your charm?”
Hornet's niece opened one eye.
“Ate it”, she (now that she could speak a little, she could tell others what her pronouns were) replied sleepily.
“Excuse me?!”
The unofficial guardian of Dirtmouth was on the verge of shouting.
“Don't need it now”, Scarlet explained, opening her other eye.
“It was the only intact object we had left from Gh
